The
seven words the IRS loves to hear:
"My
accountant takes care of my taxes."
This
is a myth. Your accountant does not take care of your
taxes any more than:
- Your
doctor takes care of your body.
- Your
dentist is responsible for your mouth.
- Your
mechanic takes care of your car.
| Who
is responsible for the food you eat? |
You? |
Your
doctor? |
| Who
is responsible for brushing and flossing your teeth? |
You? |
Your
dentist? |
| Who
is responsible for the regular maintenance and upkeep
of your car? |
You? |
Your
mechanic? |
The
answer to all of these questions is "you."
If
you give up your responsiblity of our body, mouth, and
car what happens? You get into trouble. Your body, mouth,
and car no longer function as well as they could.
The
same is true for your taxes. You are responsible for
your car, mouth, body, and your taxes.
Your
accountant depends on you for the numbers and information.
Your
accountant cannot get paid a percentage on the amount
of taxes they save you. It's illegal under their CPA
requirements. They can only get paid by getting a lot
of returns done. The more returns they get done, the
more they earn. They do not have a vested interest in
helping you save on your taxes.
Don't
confuse a tax myth for a tax fact.
